About This Quote

In her acceptance speech as the first African-American woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, Lupita Nyong'o spoke of the various roles that she was expected to fill. "I am here tonight not as the best actress in this film or in this category or in any category," she said, "but as an actress who has been given the opportunity to showcase my art and make a difference... I want to be a voice for those who have been told they don't have a voice."   In her speech, Nyong'o referred to the various roles that she was expected to fill, from wife and mother to First Lady. When she is seen as a wife, mother, and black woman only, she becomes lost in those roles.

In order for her to achieve success as an actress — and as an individual — she needs help from those around her, but those people cannot help themselves. By referring to herself as an actress who has been given the opportunity to showcase her art and make a difference, she rejects the idea that she needs to fulfill all of those roles and encourages others to do so as well.
